apparel care

Linen is one of the world’s oldest and most beloved natural fibers. While linen is durable and strong (read: one accidental hot wash won't ruin them), with proper care, your linen apparel will only grow softer and more beautiful over time. Here's how to keep your pieces in their best form.

Washing

  • Machine wash on gentle cycle in cool or warm water
  • Use a mild, eco-friendly detergent and avoid bleach
  • Wash light and dark colours separately to prevent fading and colour transfer
  • Hand wash (optional) in cool water

Drying

  • Tumble dry on low heat, remove promptly to avoid deep wrinkles
  • Pro-tip: I like to remove my linen apparel from the dryer when they're still a little bit damp and then let them air dry the rest of the way. This allows the linen to soften, but avoids deep wrinkles. This technique leaves garments with the perfect linen texture (in my opinion)
  • Note: garments will shrink 1-2" if dried completely in the dryer. Don't forget to empty that lint filter!
  • Air dry (optional) lay flat or hang to dry in a shaded and well ventilated area (direct sun can cause discolouration)

Ironing & Steaming

  • For a crisp look: iron while linen is still slightly damp, using medium to high heat with steam
  • For a relaxed look: embrace the natural wrinkles. Light steaming will refresh the fabric without removing the natural linen charm

Stains

  • Treat stains quickly
  • Sprinkle a small amount of baking soda and distilled white vinegar over the stain and gently blot
  • Continue the blotting process until the stain is gone
  • Oxiclean is also safe to use if you have it available
  • Wash your sheets as usual

Caring for your clothing is a small but meaningful ritual. With a little attention, your linen pieces from The Art of Nesting will serve you well for many seasons to come.
